A question I am often asked when giving talks is the depth of the water in the lagoon. Much of it is very shallow, below knee deep and part of the problem with water levels in the city is the dredging that takes place to allow larger boats and the cruise ships to come right up the Giudecca canal and moor in the port. While on my way to Murano yesterday I saw this man get out of his boat and walk across the water, probably going to empty his vongole baskets. As my vaporetto moves away you can see how far he has walked and that he is quite near one of the waterway channels.
He is a speck in the final photo, but it gives you an idea of where in the lagoon he was walking.
