Last Saturday I wanted to go to the Rialto Mercato for two things. I wanted some small chillies & in a vain hope some chives, I had been going on about them all week & I had been told there had been some chillies on sale there a few weeks ago. Secondly Annie asked me to get her some drier mushrooms to take home for a friend. The first thing I do in a morning is open the shutters and the weather was grey but dry. When it came time for me to go out it was raining, quite hard but I was on a mission. I was quite wet by the time I got to the vaporetto at the Accadamia & I alighted at San Silvestro & walked up the Ruga Rialto to the market. I kept muttering under my breath b****y tourists! They were stood in groups or walking slowly with their umbrellas blocking the streets.
It seemed busy but I think it was mostly gawping tourists and their umbrellas. At a stall I have used previously & favoured by locals I bought the chillies and not knowing the Italian for chives, i(t’s not chivo) & a spring onions, I would use the green tops I found Mascari for the mushrooms. I asked for 500 grams, guy serving me said grande bag, yed. When he gave it to me it was €39.50. Oooops! I wan’t sure if Annie really did mean so much so I rang her to confirm, yes that was ok. I bought a few for myself & made my way back to the vap & splish sploshed my way home. Well to Annie’s with the precious mushrooms. I was so wet she had to put a towel on the floor for me to stand on. She took my coat & hat to dry on a radiator &she thought I needed an hombra so poured me a glass of wine to recover. I sat & chatted then Mike returned & we talked more. A second glass went down well & gave me the strength to get home.
Wish I'd been wearing a pair of these, my boots took 36 hours to dry out!
During the afternoon the wind became a gale & my legs became very cold. I realized the wind was blowing the rain under my patio doors and I had a puddle creeping well into the room. I put a small towel down which was soon soaked and followed it with a bath sheet. Amazingly it also stopped the draught and my apartment warmed up to almost cosiness.
For the rest of the day I stayed put. It was a day for lying on the sofa to read.
Sunday the clouds had disappeared and the sun came out, it was beautiful. What a difference a day makes? Monday was great too and I went to the Lido and walked along the beach then sat outside at the bar on the beach, took off my fleece and enjoyed a coffee in the sunshine.
On the beach at the Lido overlooking the Adriatic Sea.
Rialto fish market.
