I was in the Correr Museum this week to see an exhibition of the works of Franceso Guardi. He is a very important artist of the city but until relatively recently forgotten and unknown.
He was a contemporary of Canaletto, whose work was much more popular but not necessarily better. He was also a rival of Pietro Longhi and there is some dispute over which paintings belong to each man and a portrait which could also be of either man.
I have come to love his paintings, the light on the buildings is amazing. He has wonderful groups of people who look as though they are engaging with each other. He also painted scenes of everyday life in Venice, at the market, casino and in Piazza San Marco. I have bought a book on Guardi versus Canaletto so more when I have finished reading it.
The attendant allowed me to take a couple of photos.
Aren't the small groups of people delightful?
Is this Guardi or Longhi?
Here are some great views of San Giorgio from the museum.
